Though somewhat more serious than he was before his fall into the chasm in Moria, Gandalf remains a powerful ally, a wise mentor, and a kind friend. Even Frodo, who believes Gandalf to be dead, benefits from his counsel, deciding to spare Gollum’s life after he remembers their conversation in The Fellowship of the Ring. Gandalf is the guiding hand of The Two Towers, prompting other characters to go where they need to be, bringing reinforcements to the hopeless battle of Helm’s Deep, and consoling Pippin even after his nearly catastrophic mistake with the palantír. ![]() After replacing Saruman as the White wizard of Middle-earth, Gandalf banishes him from the Order of wizards entirely, greatly diminishing his power. He reunites with Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, Merry, and Pippin, who are overjoyed by his return, and assists Rohan in defeating the armies of Isengard. His best-known portrayal is by Ian McKellen in Peter Jackson's 20012003 The Lord of the Rings film series, where the actor based his acclaimed performance on Tolkien himself. Tolkien’s choice to make hobbits (the everyday people) the protagonists of his story forces Aragorn into a subordinate position in the narrative. Gandalf finds friends wherever he goes The Two Towers reveals his close relationships with Treebeard the ent and Théoden (the king of Rohan), among others. The Gandalf character has been featured in radio, television, stage, video game, music, and film adaptations, including Ralph Bakshi's 1978 animated film. Aragorn (Strider, Elessar) Aragorn is the traditional hero of The Lord of the Rings the noble warrior who, through valiant martial acts, wins back his crown and marries the fair maiden in the end. Gandalf’s goodness and power are such as to make him seem a near-religious figure at times indeed, there is Christian symbolism attached to the wizard, even though the mythology of The Lord of the Rings is primarily pagan. ![]() Now Gandalf the White rather than Gandalf the Grey, he’s more powerful than before and better equipped to aid the Fellowship and their allies in defending the West from Mordor. Gandalf is the supreme force of good in the novel, a worthy opponent of the evil Saruman and Sauron. By the end of the novel Frodo decides to part ways with. Gandalf is an old wizard with a staff, has a pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak, a silver scarf, a long white beard hung down below his waist, he has big bushy. In The Fellowship of the Ring, the first book of the series, he accepts the dangerous task of carrying the One Ring into Mordor to destroy it in the fires of Mount Doom. After his death in The Fellowship of the Ring, the wizard Gandalf is mysteriously sent back to Middle-earth to complete his task there. Frodo, a hobbit from the Shire, is the main protagonist of The Lord of the Rings epic.
